A cool breeze whispered through the garden, cutting the warmth of the early summer sun. She pulled the ever incessant weeds along the edges of the garden, the smell of wet earth filled her nostrils. The sounds of birds and insects, her only soundtrack. Making her way through the rows, she collected vegetables for dinner before reaching the strawberries. Their sweetness filled the air and bees buzzed from blossom to blossom. She’d planted the seeds in pots the year before, carefully tending them knowing that she wouldn’t have fruit to eat until the following year. In the winter, she brought them inside, returning them to the garden as soon as it was warm enough. Her mouth watered as she pulled the ripe berries. She put them in the bowl she’d brought out with her, but quickly retrieved them. She used the hose to rinse them. Sitting on the border of the garden, she slipped her shoes off, and squished her toes in the soft, dark soil. She savored the sweet strawberries, warm from sitting in the sun.
